By Linda Lee, Vice President, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center
As many people know, healthcare providers were uniquely challenged during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. And throughout this extraordinary event, the Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center team pulled together to ensure patients continued to receive treatments in a safe, effective and healing environment. What most folks didn’t know is that in the midst of this global emergency we were also preparing for a major accreditation assessment. It’s where every aspect of our care is evaluated. And I’m excited to share an exciting announcement with you:
The Commission on Cancer, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, has granted three year accreditation to Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. This accolade is so important to us because it underscores our efforts to maintain excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered care.
This Commission on Cancer achievement is a testament to the strength and loyalty of our community. We care for our own and others who may come from throughout the region to access the highest-level of care in the Gulf South.
Following is a sampling of a few areas the Commission on Cancer noted:
- Numerous monthly and bi-weekly tumor boards, which consist of specialists and other healthcare providers who meet regularly to collaborate cancer cases that are unusual and/or challenging. The goal is to ensure patients receive the best possible treatment plan. Tumor boards are especially effective when a patient presents with a less common type of cancer that doesn’t have a standard course of treatment.
- The Prevention on the Go early detection program provides excellent documentation, provides services for a large number of participants and navigates next steps for those who receive an abnormal cancer screening finding.
- Excellent number of Oncology Certified Nurses.
- Strong patient navigation program with strong identification of barriers to care, such as transportation, financial assistance and other resources.
We couldn’t have received this accolade without the thousands of patients who entrust us with their care, along with other key players. Our team members. Our physicians. Our community supporters. The list goes on… Receiving this prestigious accreditation during the pandemic was a true product of partnership and I am grateful to everyone who made this possible.
Please know that we will continue creating innovative care to ensure the most effective comprehensive treatments and other interventions, always delivered with compassion and a focus on you and your loved ones.
