New Bell Is a Symbol of Hope for Patients at Lane Cancer Center

Lane Celebration Bell Dedication

There’s a new sound of hope for Lane Cancer Center patients in Zachary: a celebration bell. Symbolically rung at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, the tradition was brought over to Lane Cancer Center when the two organizations began partnering for medical oncology services in September. The special bell was installed in memory of Sheila Barrett, RN.

Before she passed away from cancer at age 56, Sheila worked at Lane Regional Medical Center for more than 25 years. The beloved nurse and respected department leader was also widely known as a mentor and a friend. An advocate for patients and nursing, Shelia was passionate about caring for others. The celebration bell installed in her memory at Lane Cancer Center will be rung by patients when they complete chemotherapy treatments.

“As we stand here ‘Sheila Strong,’ we honor Sheila and fulfill her wish to celebrate victories in the fight against cancer,” said friend and co-worker, Allyson Bennett at the bell installation ceremony.

“Each time someone steps up and rings this bell, the memory of Sheila will ring loud and clear, just as it does in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.”
