The Cancer No One Wants to Talk About is Increasing

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the country. With diagnosis rates continuing to rise, providing expert treatment and early detection to save lives is a top priority at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Because of this commitment, many dedicated doctors and team members collaborated to ensure a higher standard of care for patients throughout the Gulf South diagnosed with or who are at risk for rectal cancer. This has led to the Cancer Center earning a three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).

The Cancer Center is proud to be the first and only program in the state, and one of only 15 in the country, to be awarded this accreditation.

According to Dr. Kelly Finan, chair of the rectal multidisciplinary team at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, assembling a group of experts in treating rectal cancer was a key factor in receiving this recognition.

“Having a specialized team of doctors allows us to offer the most individualized treatment and advances our rectal cancer treatment practices, and this group looks at every patient’s case to make sure we’ve covered all the bases,” says Dr. Finan.
