Dr. Louis R. Barfield is a colorectal surgeon in Baton Rouge at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, and a member of the Colon Rectal Associates. He earned his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency in general surgery at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans and his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Schumpert/LSU Shreveport. In addition, he completed a laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery preceptorship in Richmond, VA. He is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery, but solely practices colon and rectal surgery.
Dr. Barfield is an associate professor of surgery at LSUHSC in New Orleans. He has served in multiple leadership positions at Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL) including chair of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary care team (MDC) since 2008, medical executive committee and 2018 OLOL chief of staff. He has chaired the credentials committee and served on various other OLOL committees and work groups. Furthermore, he is also involved nationally serving on the committees of the American Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Dr. Barfield performs anorectal procedures for hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectocele, anorectal abscesses and fistulas, as well as treating various other anorectal conditions. Additionally, he performs flexible lower endoscopy including colonoscopy using advanced techniques such as endoscopic mucosal resection to remove large polyps. He also specializes in minimally invasive colorectal resections for inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and colorectal polyps or cancer. He also performs advanced minimally invasive trans-anal techniques including trans-anal minimally invasive surgery and trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery.
Dr. Barfield, along with his partners, focuses on quality exemplified by the development of their Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, the first in the Baton Rouge Area, allowing for shorter length of stay and improved pain control while preserving low readmission rates. In addition, his group provides top colorectal cancer care using a multidisciplinary team approach, always looking for measures to enhance quality of care.
Dr. Barfield serves as the chair of the colorectal multidisciplinary care team (MDC) at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center.
