Dr. Stephen Hernandez is an otolaryngologist at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Dr. Hernandez completed his medical education at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, where he graduated with highest honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He then completed his internship and residency education training at LSU in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. During this time he received multiple awards and honors, including the LSU Intern of the Year Award and election to Administrative Chief Resident.
Dr. Hernandez completed fellowship in Advanced Rhinology, Oncology, and Open/Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Throughout his training, he has made contributions in the field of head and neck oncology and skull base surgery, with special attention to anterior cranial base pathology and complex reconstructions. He has authored peer reviewed publications on these topics and presented at several national meetings. He is an active member in the American Rhinologic Society and North American Skull Base Society.
Dr. Hernandez has special interests in revision endoscopic sinus surgery, complex frontal sinus surgery, open and endoscopic approaches to sinonasal tumors, minimally invasive pituitary surgery, repair of encephaloceles and CSF leaks, expanded endonasal approaches for skull base tumors, orbital surgery,and complex skull base reconstruction. He currently serves on the head and neck multidisciplinary care team (MDC) at Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center.
