MBPCC Board of Directors Elects New Members

Tom J. Meek, Jr., M.D. elected as chair

 

(Baton Rouge, La.) At the April 2013 Board of Directors meeting of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, new volunteer leadership was elected to help carry out the mission of the Center. As a nonprofit community-owned cancer center, Mary Bird Perkins is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

Tom J. Meek, Jr., M.D. was elected to serve as the Center’s board chair, the eighth in the Center’s 41 years. Dr. Meek, a physician with The Dermatology Clinic, succeeds community volunteer Donna M. Saurage, who will remain on the board for an additional two years as immediate past chair. “I am honored to serve an institution devoted to the comfort and care of individuals with cancer,” said Dr. Meek. “I look forward to the day when through the collective efforts of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and other similar groups, cancer no longer disrupts the lives of our families and friends.”

Other officers elected include Vice Chair Brett P. Furr, Taylor Porter Attorneys at Law; and Secretary/Treasurer Thomas J. Adamek, Stonehenge Capital Company, LLC.  Other officers include Maurice King, M.D., medical director and Todd Stevens, president/CEO, Mary Bird Perkins. In addition, J. Gerard (Jerry) Jolly, KPMG LLP, was named Director Emeritus for his years of service on the board, most recently as Immediate Past Chair.

Board members newly elected for three-year terms include Laurie Aronson, president and CEO, Lipsey’s Inc.; Janice Guitreau, community volunteer; Eric Lane, vice president, Gerry Lane Enterprises; and Erich Sternberg, president, Starmount Life Insurance Company. Art Favre, Performance Contractors, Inc., and Thomas J. Adamek were re-elected for additional three-year terms. Additional Board members include Lee M. Berg, Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry; Dudley W. Coates, Legg Mason (retired); William T. Firesheets, Buquet &LeBlanc; Alice Greer, community volunteer; G. Lee Griffin, Chase (retired), LSU Foundation; Rose J. Hudson, Louisiana Lottery Corporation; Bill O’Quin, Financial Services Online; Gail O’Quin, self-employed; John F. Smith, consultant; and David A. Winkler, Faulk & Winkler, LLC.

“Volunteer leadership is vital to Mary Bird Perkins. The organization greatly benefits from the perspectives and areas of expertise all board members contribute,” said Stevens. “With their guidance, we are leading the charge against cancer to help build healthier communities for families and friends across southeast Louisiana.”
