HOUMA, LA. – Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Live Well Bayou, a no-cost early detection and education event, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Terrebonne General Health System (8200 Main Street). This community event will provide residents from Terrebonne Parish and surrounding communities an opportunity to take advantage of four different types of cancer screenings, including breast, prostate, colorectal and skin cancer. Participants will also have access to blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose checks, all while enjoying music and fun activities for the entire family.
“We are looking forward to this year’s event in Houma and residents from the region to join us to receive their annual cancer screenings,” said Hope Jones, Bayou regional manager, early detection, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “Through the use of our mobile medical units, the Cancer Center makes these routine, yet critical, screenings both convenient and comfortable. Live Well Bayou has made it easier than ever to access preventive resources.”
Appointments are required for all screenings, however, walkups will be accommodated. If an abnormality is found, a nurse navigator will assist screening participants with next steps, also at no cost. To make an appointment, please call (985) 239-5379.
Last year, 151 screenings were conducted at Live Well Bayou, resulting in five cancer diagnoses.
Mary Bird Perkins and Terrebonne General formed a partnership in 2008 with one goal in mind: to offer communities in the Bayou Region a comprehensive cancer center, close to home. Since then, the Cancer Center has served thousands of residents.
This event is also made possible thanks to the generous support of Cenac Marine Services. Cenac has served as a steadfast supporter of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and shares the organization’s passion for ensuring that Bayou Region residents have access to life-saving cancer screenings and early detection services.
“Early Detection is the key to better cancer outcomes,” said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO, Terrebonne General Health System. “We are thankful to our community partner, Cenac Marine Services for their support in providing this important screening opportunity for our community.”
