(Baton Rouge, La.)
Andrew J. McWhorter, M.D., a laryngologist and expert in laryngeal cancer at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, was one of a select number of American physicians recently invited to present at the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies’ (IFHNOS) World Congress on Larynx Cancer 2015 in Cairnes, Queensland, Australia. Dr. McWhorter, a member of the Cancer Center’s Head and Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Team and director of the Our Lady of the Lake Voice Center, spoke to colleagues at the global conference in July. His presentation focused on the management of laryngeal dysplasia or pre-cancer in the operating room and in the office, the role of transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) in laryngeal salvage surgery and patients’ swallowing and voice outcomes post-surgery. “It was an honor to attend this congress and speak with colleagues and share knowledge; it was a great learning opportunity,” said McWhorter. “The Federation encourages international camaraderie, friendship and collegiality among head and neck surgeons and oncologists from all parts of the world.” A global organization with membership representing 65 countries, IFHNOS encourages international partnerships for projects of mutual interest through collaborative research, and sponsors local, regional and national meetings for continuing medical education in head and neck cancer.
