Strength Close to Home

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Houma, a partnership with Terrebonne General Health System, is part of the fabric of the Bayou Region and remains steadfast in providing compassionate, comprehensive cancer care for everyone we are privileged to serve. It is important to the Cancer Center team that patients receive the latest state-of-the-art treatments to help them throughout their cancer journey, all while remaining close to home.

An example of this advanced treatment is stereotactic body radiation therapy, or SBRT. It’s a type of radiation therapy that delivers extremely precise doses of radiation to cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. It involves the use of sophisticated image guidance that pinpoints the exact location of a tumor so that the radiation can be more precisely delivered to cancer cells.

“Patients are thrilled that with the use of SBRT, they only have to undergo three to five treatments where with typical radiation it could be anywhere from two to nine weeks of treatment,” said Dr. Jeffrey Long, a radiation oncologist at the Cancer Center.

Watch the video below to hear Dr. Long explain more about how the Cancer Center is expanding its use of SBRT and the advantages it brings to patients in the Houma community.
