Cancer Center Employee Receives Statewide Award

Nicole Magee named LCRA Distinguished Member of the Year

(Baton Rouge, La.) The Louisiana Cancer Registrar’s Association (LCRA) recently named Nicole Magee, director, Baton Rouge and Southwest Louisiana Regional Tumor Registries, its Distinguished Member of the Year at the group’s fall conference Oct. 16 in Lafayette, La. The annual award is presented to an LCRA member, selected from peer nominations, who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the Association.

With over 20 years of experience in the registry, Magee is currently the director of two Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited tumor registries – Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Additionally, she is the director of both the Baton Rouge and Southwest Louisiana regional tumor registries encompassing a total of 16 parishes. Magee oversees two tumor boards, manages grants and participates in patient-centered outcome special studies.

“Nicole has a remarkable work ethic,” stated Renea Duffin, the Cancer Center’s vice president, cancer support and outreach. “She consistently strives to improve registry functions by collaborating with her team members, area hospital registries and the Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR) to improve workflow and data quality. She is extremely deserving of this prestigious award.”

The LCRA was founded in 1977 for the purpose of providing educational opportunities, workshops, seminars and symposiums for registrars and their associates in order to improve the quality and uniformity of registries in Louisiana. The primary responsibility of a cancer registrar is to assure that complete and accurate data are collected and maintained for all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated within an institution or other defined population such as the state of Louisiana. This data is kept in a cancer registry for education, lifetime patient follow-up and research. A cancer registry is a data system designed for the collection, management and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of cancer.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is a regional cancer care organization that has been fighting cancer for more than 40 years. With five centers in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and Gonzales, its service area encompasses 18 parishes across southeast Louisiana. For more information, please visit www.marybird.org.
