Mary Bird Perkins Expands its Leading-edge Radiation Treatment
Tangipahoa Residents Have access to the Latest Technology
(Hammond) –
Residents of the Tangipahoa area now have access to the latest generation of cancer-fighting technology – the Infinity, which was installed recently at the Hammond center. The Infinity is a sophisticated treatment system made by Elekta, a world leader in radiation therapyfor treating cancer. Using radiation therapy and state-of -the-art computerized medical imaging to treat patients, the Infinity allows for a customized and precise radiation treatment plan. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center offers the most advanced resources available in the field to ensure that each patient’s treatment is personalized for their individual fight against cancer. “The acquisition of the Infinity further demonstrates Mary Bird Perkins’ long-standing dedication to offer patients access to the most leading-edge technology available, to help them in every way we can to beat this disease,” said Tammy Asmus, director of radiation therapy operations, Hammond. Elekta’s Infinity incorporates best-in-class computerized medical imaging technology to treat people with radiation therapy. Because of its superior image guidance capabilities, Infinity can be very useful in treating, for example, prostate cancer, as well as cancers of the head and neck. The Infinity is equipped with VMAT (Volumetric Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy) technology, intended to shorten treatment time without compromising quality of care. Elekta believes VMAT’s shorter treatment times will translate into increased patient comfort and improved accuracy by reducing time spent during treatment. Mary Bird Perkins continues to expand its technology arsenal with additions like the Elekta Infinity. Providing the center’s highly-experienced radiation oncologists with the best possible options for personalized radiation treatments affords patients their greatest opportunity to beat cancer.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Hammond is located on the campus of North Oaks Health System. The radiation treatment center was established in 1988 to serve the residents of the Tangipahoa area. For more information, please visit
