Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Louisiana’s largest cancer care organization, has expanded our commitment to comprehensive cancer care on the Northshore with the addition of specialized breast surgery and imaging, along with its traditional medical and radiation oncology services.
These expanded services create a personalized experience for the detection, diagnosis, treatment and support for patients in our community facing breast cancer.
Mary Bird Perkins has locations in three Northshore areas, including: Covington, Slidell and Hammond. The Cancer Center has had a presence on the Northshore since 1988.

We are proud to have the only female fellowship-trained breast
surgical oncologist on the Northshore, supported by a team of specialists to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Fellowship-trained breast surgeon offer the highest-level training and serve as a key component component to a multidisciplinary team.
Our highly-skilled breast surgical oncologists specialize in a range of procedures, including breast conservation surgery (BCS)/lumpectomies, mastectomies, reconstructive surgery and oncoplastics and hidden scar techniques that combine oncologic principles with aesthetic results.
Mary Bird Perkins now operates the region’s first dedicated breast imaging center on the campus of AVALA Hospital. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Breast Imaging provides enhanced services for the community through screening and diagnostic imaging technology and a patient-focused approach.
Dr. Daniel Rupley, a board-certified breast radiology specialist, leads the imaging program that includes state-of-the-art equipment including 3D mammography, ultrasound, and breast MRI, as well as stereotactic breast biopsies and same-day results reviewed on site, ensuring earlier detection and accurate diagnoses.
Medical oncology focuses on treating cancer with medications. For breast cancer patients, this includes treatments like chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy.
Mary Bird Perkins’ team of compassionate and experienced medical oncologists work closely with other specialists to provide comprehensive care, manage side effects and monitor patients’ progress.
Radiation therapy is a common treatment that targets and destroys cancer cells in the breast and surrounding areas. The goal is to eliminate any remaining cancer cells following previous treatments, reducing the risk of the cancer coming back. It can also be used to shrink a tumor before surgery or to treat cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
