Annual Barbershop Prostate Cancer Screening Set

Cancer Center urges early detection in highest risk groups

(Baton Rouge, La.) Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men in Louisiana, according to the American Cancer Society. Because of this statistic, each year in September, which is designated as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center holds its annual barbershop screening to increase awareness and early detection of the disease. This year’s event will once again take place at Webb’s Barber Shop, 414 Eddie Robinson Drive, Saturday, September 13 from 9 a.m. – noon. “There’s an important and critical conversation underway in our country right now about who should be screened and treated for prostate cancer, said Dr. Sheldon Johnson, radiation oncologist, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “I encourage men to talk to their primary care physician about whether a screening is right for them, especially if they are at a high risk for the disease. An early detection screening is still the best way to catch cancer and beat it. Prostate screenings are for men age 50 and older who do not have a doctor or have not been screened in the past 12 months. Those at higher risk such as African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer should consider being screened beginning at age 45. The prostate cancer screening is performed by a doctor and includes a PSA blood test and physical exam. The American Cancer Society recommends discussing prostate screening with a doctor to determine if it is right for you.
