Gerry Lane Enterprises Gears up for Screenings

When Eric Lane, president, Gerry Lane Enterprises, heard about the Cancer Center’s Prevention on the Go workplace program, he saw it as a great opportunity to bring potentially lifesaving cancer education and screenings to his team members. Serving on the Mary Bird Perkins Board of Directors, Eric has always been an advocate for early detection and wants to ensure everyone at his company knows the benefits of cancer screenings. In an effort to create greater awareness among his employees about the importance of early detection, Gerry Lane Enterprises worked with the Cancer Center to customize the workplace program to meet the unique needs of the organization. Gerry Lane dealerships in Baton Rouge employ over 300 people, the majority being male and a large number of African-American men. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men in Louisiana and studies show that African-American men are more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage and are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as Caucasian men. Knowing these statistics, the Cancer Center customized the workplace program and provided skin and prostate screenings. In addition, education sessions were planned around employees’ schedules as to not interfere with service hours. The sales team and service crew were divided into small groups and attended the education sessions in ten minute increments to make attending them as convenient as possible.
