Dedicated Research Pharmacy Brings Future Cancer Treatments Closer to Home

Mary Bird Perkins is accelerating access to innovative cancer therapies by bringing complex clinical trials through an independent research pharmacy dedicated exclusively to clinical trials.

Previously, Mary Bird Perkins managed clinical trial medications through its main pharmacy services. Then, in late 2023, the center established a research pharmacy enabling a specialized oncology pharmacist to manage trial drugs, strict storage protocols and complex documentation and reporting requirements.

Jessica Vidrine, PharmD, oncology pharmacist, was working in the main compounding pharmacy and seized the opportunity to oversee the research pharmacy.

“Clinical research gives patients access to innovative therapies while also helping shape the future of cancer treatment,” said Vidrine. “One of the most meaningful parts of my job is knowing that the work we do today may help improve outcomes for future patients for years to come.”

From creating treatment plans and managing investigational products to bridging the gap between pharmacy and research teams, it takes a true collaborative effort to safely deliver clinical trial therapies to patients. This advancement provides significant benefits to both patients and the organization.

Candace Breaux, PharmD, is the primary backup oncology pharmacist at the Essen research pharmacy. Her experience, dedication, and willingness to support others helped shape not only the department but also Jessica Vidrine’s journey to become a research pharmacist. “I love what I do every day and have enjoyed seeing Mary Bird Perkins grow to reach more patients in rural areas, as well as offer revolutionary treatments that are not readily available in most places,” says Breaux.

The research pharmacy currently supports active clinical trials at the Essen, Covington, and Metairie locations.

In October 2025, the research pharmacy completed a significant renovation to establish a USP 797/USP 800-compliant cleanroom environment designed to support the growing complexity of oncology and clinical research services. The facility upgrade helps Mary Bird Perkins secure more early-phase, advanced, and breakthrough clinical trials while expanding local patient access to therapies closer to home.

How Patients Are Selected for a Clinical Trial

Every patient treated at Mary Bird Perkins is evaluated for clinical trial eligibility. Our process includes reviewing a patient’s medical history and collaboration with the treating physician to further determine eligibility for the trial. The physician(s) and a clinical researcher then meet with eligible patients to discuss options.
