DeEtte DeArmond, a founding member of the Gonzales Area Foundation (GAF), always says, “The more you give, the better life gets in Ascension Parish.” And because of the community’s generosity, local cancer patients will continue to have access to the highest quality cancer care at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Gonzales.
The GAF hosted its third annual Gonzales Gala recently, and the community enjoyed a night filled with generosity and hope as they raised funds to benefit local cancer patients.
Generous donors provided an array of gifts for the live auction including a trip to Italy, autographed guitars by renowned country artists, a weekend boat trip and much more. DeArmond said that plans are already underway for the 2019 Gala and other GAF events throughout the remainder of this year.
The Gala brings the community together in a fun, festive atmosphere, but always keeping those who are fighting cancer as the focus of the evening. Funds raised benefit a number of key aspects of care at the Gonzales center, including education and early detection programs and survivorship services.
“I’m never surprised, but always inspired by the generosity and compassion our community members have for their neighbors.”
“Ascension Parish has so many wonderful people who want to make a true difference in the lives of those who are affected by this disease,” said DeArmond. “Our hope as a foundation is to be able to continue extending and expanding cancer services to all members of the community. The turnout each year at this event shows us that there are many people eager to help.”
The night concluded with survivors ringing bells at each table, a tradition at the Cancer Center for those who have completed treatment. Ascension Parish survivors filled the room with the sound of chimes, demonstrating the power of the community coming together to help improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer for their friends and neighbors.
