Michael Shannon, D.D.S.

Dr. Michael Shannon is a prosthodontist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Dentistry earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. He then completed a residency specializing in Prosthodontics and earned his Prosthodontic Degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry along with a Master of Oral Biology Degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Prosthodontics is the only dental specialty that provides training in management of cancer treatment from a dental perspective.

Dr. Shannon received his training in this area at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. At Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center patients that require radiation affecting the oral cavity are educated by Dr. Shannon about the long‐term effects radiation therapy can have on the jaw bones and mouth along with what to expect during and after treatment. He physically examines the oral cavity and teeth prior to radiation therapy along with a dental x-ray. After patient education and exam, collaboration between the patient and Dr. Shannon occurs to determine what treatment is best for each individual situation. If teeth extractions are recommended and accepted Dr. Shannon will help in the coordination of the extractions. He also manages post radiation teeth problems utilizing the patient’s dosimetry to determine the safest treatment options.

Dr. Shannon is a Clinical Assistant Professor and has taught Prosthodontics and TMJ at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry since hurricane Katrina in 2005. He maintains a private practice in Baton Rouge and also provides prosthodontic needs to veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital a half day per week.
