Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Concludes Successful Fall ‘Live Well’ Events

Signature Community Health Events to Return in April

BATON ROUGE, La. –  Following Mary Bird Perkins’ Live Well Bayou cancer screening event held on Nov. 4 in Houma, the Cancer Center has completed its community-wide Live Well health events for the year.  No-cost cancer screening events will continue across Mary Bird Perkins’ network through the end of the year.

Members of Mary Bird Perkins' Outreach team at Live Well Ascension‘Live Well’ events are held annually in six regions across Louisiana and southwest Mississippi, including Baton Rouge, Covington, Gonzales, Houma, Monroe and Natchez. The large, street fair-style events, held in the spring and fall, feature screenings for multiple cancers, including breast, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer, in addition to biometric screenings and other health education resources.

This fall, Live Well events were held in Gonzales, Covington, and Houma. Hundreds of participants received multiple cancer screenings. Any individual who has an abnormal finding is assigned a navigator who will assist in coordinating further testing and other assistance needed.

Live Well Ascension (Oct. 7)

  • 78 unique participants
  • 143 total cancer screenings
  • 61% uninsured

Live Well Northshore (Oct. 21)

  • 107 unique participants
  • 199 total cancer screenings
  • 70% uninsured

Live Well Bayou (Nov. 4)

  • 125 unique participants
  • 233 total cancer screenings
  • 57% uninsured

Participants attending Live Well Bayou in Houma“The ability to provide nearly 600 cancer screenings across three of regions is a testament to the generosity of sponsors who make the events possible, as well as the hard work and dedication of our Prevention on the Go team,” said Renea Duffin, vice president, cancer support and outreach, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “We will be bringing Live Well events back in the spring and we encourage people to mark their calendars now. However, you don’t have to wait to get your annual screenings until then – we provide free screenings all year long!”

Three Live Well events will be held throughout the spring of 2024:

  • Live Well Mississippi (Natchez, Miss.) – April 13
  • Live Well Delta (Monroe, La.) – April 27
  • Live Well Baton Rouge – May 13
