Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to Offer Free Cancer Screenings at Live Well Delta Event in Monroe

MONROE, La. – Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s popular Live Well community event is coming to Northeast Louisiana. Live Well Delta, a cancer early detection screening and education opportunity, will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Monroe Civic Center Plaza. This free community event is designed to provide residents from across the Delta Region and Ouachita parish an opportunity to take advantage of four different types of cancer screenings, including breast, prostate, colorectal and skin cancer. Participants can also access blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose checks.

Aside from these important cancer screenings and health services, there will be food, music and fun activities for the entire family.

Research has shown that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have delayed routine medical care, and thus, delayed cancer screenings and other scheduled preventative care services. For Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, community events such as Live Well Delta serve as an important means to conduct outreach, raise awareness, and provide general health education and resources.

“We cannot wait to bring our Live Well event to Monroe,” said Myra Gatling-Akers, regional manager, early detection and education, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “When it comes to educating residents about the importance of early detection and screening, there’s just no better way to reach people than through these on-the-ground, grassroots type of events. We encourage every member of the community to come out and join us for Live Well Delta – it may just save your life.”

Appointments are required for all screenings and all activities at the event are free, thanks to generous donor support. If an abnormality is found, a nurse navigator will assist screening participants with next steps, also at no cost. To make an appointment, please call (318) 414-9758.
