Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC Hosts Cancer Survivors Day Luncheon

In celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day

(Houma) – In celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC hosted a luncheon on June 1, 2012 in the TGMC Medical Atrium Auditorium. This local event was part of a worldwide celebration on June 3, coordinated by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. More than 50 survivors and their guests attended the luncheon in celebration of life. Many of the survivors participated in a bake-off contest, where there were eight delicious homemade desserts.

Anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is considered a cancer survivor, according to the NCSD Foundation. Nearly 12 million Americans are now living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer. In the United States, men have a slightly less than a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women, the risk is a little more than 1 in 3.

The luncheon featured guest speaker Mrs. Mary Chauvin, owner of Etiquette Center of the South. Mrs. Chauvin gave an inspirational talk about the power of a positive attitude lifting the spirits of the cancer survivors. In addition to the guest speaker, Dr. Harry McGaw, medical oncologist, welcomed all cancer survivors, giving a brief overview of the comprehensive cancer care Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC offers its patients.

“It is always uplifting to see so many faces that are filled with life at the cancer survivor’s luncheon. Cancer affects so many of us and it is important to all of us at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC that we offer the highest quality of care close to home so that we can support our community members on their road to survivorship,” said Phyllis Peoples, President and CEO of TGMC. “We are thrilled to celebrate life with all of our survivors and look forward to bringing hope and survivorship to more cancer survivors throughout the Bayou Region,” continued Peoples.
