Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to host annual Live Well Delta screening event

MONROE, La. – Live Well Delta, a community health event featuring free cancer screenings, food, music and other health resources, returns to northeast Louisiana on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Monroe Civic Center Plaza (401 Lea Joyner Expressway, Monroe, La.). For the fourth consecutive year, residents from across the 12-parish delta region will have access to free cancer screenings for breast, colorectal, prostate and skin.

In addition to cancer screenings, participants will have access to biometric screenings as well as other health education resources. Lunch will also be provided to those who receive a cancer screening. While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a cancer screening, call (318) 414-9758 or visit marybird.org/livewelldelta.

“Early detection saves lives,” said Myra Gatling-Akers, regional manager, cancer support and outreach, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “We encourage everyone to take charge of their health by spending the morning with us at Live Well Delta getting screened and having some fun while doing it.”

At last year’s Live Well Delta event:

  • 125 participants received a total of 236 free cancer screenings
  • 16 were navigated due to abnormal findings
  • Of those who got screened, 53 percent had never been screened before

Through the generosity of its donors, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center offers free cancer screenings for participants at Live Well Delta and other events throughout the year. These free cancer screenings are available to those with or without insurance.

If an abnormal finding is detected during a screening, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s patient navigators will work directly with the participant on next steps.

“Our mission is to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer,” said Gatling-Akers. “For many residents – especially those in rural areas – this may be one of the only opportunities they have to conveniently access critical early detection services. We hope to see participation continue to grow!”
